college 300x230 College Placement TestMany colleges test students to learn more about their level of skills. Colleges then use these placement tests to place you into courses that match your skills. You do not pass or fail placement tests. Their main purpose is to make sure that you do not take courses that are too difficult or too easy for you.

Placement tests are most frequently given in math and English. However, colleges may also test in other areas, such as foreign language, study skills, and computer skills. Placement tests are especially important in subjects where the material you learn in one course is directly needed for other courses.

Open admissions colleges almost always give placement tests. These colleges do not restrict admission to the college. Therefore, they need a way of evaluating each student’s skills. At most colleges (open, selective, and competitive), you may be excused from placement testing if your college entrance exam scores are high enough or if you have already taken certain high school or college classes.

Many colleges give placement tests as part of their orientation program. Sometimes, you can walk right into the placement office to take the test. Other times, you can schedule your tests in advance.

In either case, take your placement tests as soon as you can. The sooner you learn the results, the more time you will have to figure out which courses you should select. In addition, many colleges will not let you sign up for courses until you have taken your placement tests.

The college may provide materials that will help you prepare for placement tests. These materials may include sample questions. It’s important to prepare so that the tests accurately reflect your skills. Arrive on time for tests. Bring the required materials, including a photo identification, if needed. For math tests, find out what type of calculator, if any, you may use.
