Regular decision. Selective and competitive colleges have cut-off dates for applications.Deadlines generally range from December through March. You are then notified of their decision in mid-March through mid-April. Specific dates vary by college.

Rolling admissions. Applications are considered in order of receipt. Space can run out. Students applying earlier have a better chance of acceptance.Final cutoff dates vary. Look for priority deadlines.

Open admissions. Applications are accepted until classes begin. Students are guaranteed admission with few requirements. Earlier application usually provides better access to special programs and class selection.

Early decision. A special opportunity for students with a clear first choice. Your application is due earlier than for regular admissions, often by November 15. You are notified earlier, often by December 15. If you are accepted and offered adequate financial assistance, you are obligated to attend. You must submita nonrefundable deposit and decline any other admissions offers.

Early action. Similar to early decision, for students with a clear first choice. The biggest difference is that you usually have until the regular admission reply date to send in your deposit and your decision is not binding.

Early admissions. Allows students to attend college full time instead of their senior year of high school. For excellent and mature students. Apply during your junior year of high school.

Waiting list. Colleges accept more students than they have spaces for. They keep waiting lists in case space opens up. You may be accepted later. While waiting, accept another offer to be sure of space somewhere.

Transfer admissions. Special guidelines for students who have already taken classes at another college. Guidelines may differ based on where you have attended and when you plan to transfer. Many two-year colleges have special arrangements with four-year colleges. Transfer admission is also affected by how many courses you have already taken and at what level.
