SAT Subject Tests. Formerly called Achievement Tests; cover specific subjects such as biology,world history, and French; often requested by competitive colleges in addition to SAT Reasoning Tests.

ACT. American College Testing. Multiple-choice tests in four areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning; an optional writing test is now available.

PSAT/NMSQT. Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Gives practice for the SAT Reasoning Test and the chance to enter National Merit scholarship programs.

  • English: Literature
  • History and Social Studies: U.S. History, World History
  • Mathematics: Math Level 1, Math Level 2
  • Sciences: Biology (E/M), Chemistry, Physics
  • Languages: Chinese with Listening, French, French with Listening, German, German with Listening, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese with Listening, Korean with Listening, Latin, Spanish, Spanish with Listening

The SAT Subject Tests cover specific topics in depth. Many students take these tests toward the end of the school year in which they studied the particular subject. For example, if you take a chemistry course as a high school sophomore, you may take the SAT Subject Test in chemistry toward the end of your sophomore year.

Other important tests are the Advanced Placement or AP tests. Students who have taken an AP course can choose to take these tests. AP courses and tests are not available everywhere.
