Colleges want to know more about you than just what you have done in the classroom. They also want to know about your achievements outside of class.
School Activities
Colleges depend on students to contribute to the college community. If students do not get involved in campus activities, the quality of that college suffers. Therefore, colleges are interested in students who have a track record of being involved.
You will have an opportunity to tell the college about ways you have participated in your school. Were you active in plays or choirs? Did you work on the school newspaper or yearbook? Did you participate in student government? Were you a member of any clubs?
Athletics
Students who participate in athletics develop important skills in both cooperation and competitiveness. They develop leadership skills. They also show their ability to balance the time demands of the classroom with the demands of their particular sport.
Work
Many colleges are interested in knowing about your work experiences. Students who have worked can show that they are mature and responsible.
Community Service and Activities
Colleges are increasingly interested in students who can show a proven commitment to their community through civic, religious, community and other volunteer activities.
